Microsoft Demos WP7 Mango Update at MIX11
At Microsoft’s developer conference, MIX, the company has brought out its latest and greatest update for its Windows Phone 7 platform. This is the first major update for WP7, and is being called Mango. Microsoft demoed the update in length on Wednesday, showing its new features such as multitasking, hardware accelerated IE9 mobile, better HTML 5 handling, Twitter integration, better Office cloud integration, background audio, push notifications, and over 1500 API’s for developers. Along with all these new features, Microsoft also demoed new apps coming to the platform, including Skype, Amazon Shopping, and Kik Messenger (just to name a few). The update is expected to arrive in Q3 2011, with OEMs apparently being told to expect the update “by fall, at the latest.”
The update looks like a promising addition to an already stellar platform. In my opinion, Windows Phone 7 is a beautiful platform that has a lot of potential, and I expect it to be a major OS by the end of the year, up there with iOS, Android, and webOS. And with the Mango update, the OS is only getting better.
